A store that sells nothing but bar stools, a pork shop that uses a 145-year-old recipe for smoked bacon, and a brewery that crafts a beer for each exit – these are a few of the unique locations travelers will find if they slow down and explore the southern end of the New Jersey Turnpike.

NJ Southbound (formerly called NJ1134.org) is a multimedia web site dedicated to exploring South Jersey’s diverse culture, residents, and issues. This volume — entitled “Off the Turnpike” — is the result of a semester-long search for unique and overlooked stories just off of one of America’s most iconic highways.

NJ Southbound is created by students in the Online Journalism II course at Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey. Students from the Photojournalism and On-Camera Field Reporting courses also contributed photos and videos to the project.
